What is Astigmatism?
Although it is a condition that affects the eye, astigmatism is not an eye disease but a very common refractive error that affects most people to a certain degree. You may have a combination of refractive errors, including astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia. A qualified optometrist will be able to diagnose any of these conditions and suggest treatment.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
People with astigmatism often report blurry or distorted vision, eyestrain, headaches and fatigue. You may find that you squint in an effort to see clearly, or that you have some general eye discomfort.
Causes of Astigmatism
Astigmatism can be caused by normal variations in growth from person to person, or it can be inherited. The cornea, or front surface of the eye can be shaped in such a way as to cause astigmatism, or it can result from the lens inside of the eye becoming slightly tilted. Astigmatism cannot be caused or worsened by reading in low light or sitting too close to screens.
Treatment for Astigmatism
Your astigmatism may be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, or a method of vision correction as recommended by your ophthalmologist. The right treatment for you will depend on a number of factors, from your overall health and lifestyle to the specific condition of your eyes.
